History of the Formation.
Britain having managed to colonize India and Egypt thus control of the Suez Canal, they wanted to know the source of river Nile. They embarked on an expedition that landed them to the great Lake Victoria that was hidden far away in East Africa Uganda that was discovered by Henry Morton Stanley in 1875.
In their due cause they managed to settle and Assume protectorate over Uganda that was rich in minerals e.g. Kilembe mines where by need to transport the same back to their country and for administrative purpose called for the construction of a railway line that was seen as the only solution in maintaining control over that distant land/country.
The matter was then taken to the Britain Parliament House of lords and commons for discussion and debate was met with great criticism. It was latter agreed upon and in 1894 plans for the construction of the Uganda Railway had at last been finalized with Mombasa as the starting point with it came the appointment of Mr. George Whitehouse a veteran of Railway building in South America, Mexico and India as the chief Engineer.

Sir Richard Catling checking on the possible Railway line routes
Mr. Whitehouse set to task and the 1st rails were laid on 30th may 1896 thus began the construction of the so called “lunatic line”. On 24th may 1899, the railhead reached “Uaso-en Airobe” a Maasai expression meaning “river of cold water” that soon became abbreviated and baptized to become Nairobi.
In spite of everything on 19th December 1901 the railway line reached its goal of Lake Victoria that gave birth to Port Florence now Kisumu city, that was named after the 2nd Engineers wife Sir Robert Preston who laid the rail.

Florence and Robert laying the final rail at Port Florence now Kisumu on 19th December, 1901.
In 1927 the railway line reached Uganda through Nakuru, Eldoret, and Malaba.
Due to insecurity, marauding animals and to safe guard railway material from vandalism and theft from the locals who were against the construction, the British government brought in Police officers from India which was a British protectorate by then and established a Police force called Uganda Railway Police and also started recruiting African Locals to the police force

The appointment of senior officers to the police were done by the Secretary Of State in Britain and the 1st senior officer by the name Raymond Marmaduke S.P was transferred from India to head the Uganda Police at Mombasa in 1897.
In 1902 he was later again transferred to Nairobi as Assistant District Superintendent of Police.
The railway line having reached Kisumu, a fleet of ships was started at Lake Victoria to act as a link between Kenya and Uganda thus forming a section of Police by the name Marine Police for guard and escort duties.
On 26th February 1926 the Uganda railways was changed to Kenya/Uganda railways thus changing the police to Kenya/Uganda railway Police formation within the Kenya police.
27th Dec 1927 the Kenya/Uganda railways was changed to Kenya/Uganda railways & harbours and the Police Formation changed to Kenya/Uganda railways & harbours Police to incorporate the Marines.
