NYANZA FLOODING - April 27, 2006:
Police report that flooding in Nyando District is subsiding
and residents are returning to their homes. Nyando OCPD
and other members of the District Disaster Committee reported
this after returning from a fact finding tour of the affected
areas yesterday. 30 families that had been displaced by
flooding from Waswa Village, Ayweyo sub-location had returned
to their homes by Monday this week. In Lower Kadianga, flooding
destroyed growing maize but had not affected any homes.
RIVERS NZOIA AND NYANDO FLOODS UPDATE(27th
April 2006)
The flooding in parts of Nyanza Province is now subsiding
and residents have begun to return to their homes.
The police are monitoring the situation closely and Red
Cross officials are on the ground supplying residents of
the affected area with mosquito nets.
RIVERS NZOIA AND NYANDO FLOODS UPDATE
Reports from OCPD Nyando and OCS Ukwala giving an update
on flooding of the rivers Nyando and Nzoia, show that River
Nzoia has burst its banks within Sifuyo East Sub-Location
in West Ugenya Location, Siaya District submerging 34 homes.
As a result 170 families have been displaced and forced
to seek shelter on higher ground. Police are advising the
public to remain in high ground in the following areas:

1. Sifuyo Genge
2. Mutondo
3. Genro
4. Karamogi
5. Omawa
6. Ugoma
A surveillance team led by OCPD Nyando also
reports that on 23rd April 2006 they found 30 families from
Waswa Village within Ayweyo Sub-location were camping at Nyachoda
Primary School after their homes got waterlogged following
heavy rain in the area. However, the water is subsiding and
the families have begun returning to their homesteads. No
casualties have been reported so far and Police are still
monitoring the situation.
