Bases
Brief
History
Nyanza Province is
one of the eight provinces in the country. Its located 385 kilometres North of Nairobi. It has a
total area of about 32912 km out of which 15979 km is
under water. It is bordered by Western Province to the
North Rift to the East and Republc of Tanzania and Uganda
to the South and West respectively. 7 of its divisions
borders the lake.
It has an estimated
population of about 4.7 million people. In the average,
there are 300 persons per sq km. The highland areas
of Kisii, Nyamira, Gucha and Kisii are more densely
populated as compared to lowlands region. The province
is inhabited by the Luos, Gusii, Kuria , Luyhas and
Abasuba tribes.
Climate
Generally, Nyanza Province
is characterized by sufficient rainfall for Agricultural
production. The rainfall pattern in the province is
unevenly distributed throughout the year where highland
regions of Kisii, Nyamira and Gucha receives heavy ranfall
whereas the lowland areas around Lake Victoria receives
less rainfall. The rainy period being April/May and
October/November.
Economic
Potential
The region is endowed with abundant natural and human
resources. The natural resources include the rich soils
of Kisii highlands as well as ample rainfall which supports
agriculture and livestock. Lake Victoria has about 54,000
fishermen operating 11,235 fishing boats. Over 90% of
the country’s total output of fish and products
come from Lake Victoria. A number of major rivers traverse
the province and drain towards Lake Victoria e.g. River
Nyando, Sondu Miriu, Yala etc. Most of these rivers
have potential for irrigation.
Lake Victoria multi-species
fisheries is an important economic resource in the region.
The agro bases industries are tea processing, coffee,
sugarcane industries and tobacco. Great potential for
tourist attractions, include many historical sites e.g.
Ruma National Park. Recreational sailing Islands and
Kisumu museum.
Security
The province is relatively
calm save for isolated incidences reported in various
parts of the province.

- Lynching of suspected witches
- Land Conflicts
- Assaults
- Lake/river drowning
- Suicides
Murders
Kenya and Uganda shares
border within Lake Victoria. The two countries enjoy
cordial relationship. The security problems experienced
along the border are:-
• Piracy
• Infiltration of arms to Kenya
• Transportation of bhang and other drug substance
to Kenya through the lake
• Harassment of Kenya fishermen
