| Police Headquarters
has received a report on a regrettable shooting incident
at Kuresoi in Molo last night during which a man was
shot dead and two others injured when a police officer
from the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) stationed in the
area opened fire at the home of a local resident.
Briefly, the police constable is reported to have gone
to the home of the woman at about 2.00 a.m. and demanded
the woman opens the house. Three sons of the woman confronted
the policeman for an explanation. It is alleged that
the policeman then opened fire on them killing 24 year
old Joseph Muguto on the spot and wounding his two brothers.
The injured have been treated at Molo Sub-District Hospital
and are out of danger.
Following the incident, the police officer was immediately
disarmed, arrested and his weapon and ammunition, including
spent cartridges, seized for ballistic tests as part
of the investigations. He is in police custody and will
be charged before court as soon as the investigations
are complete.
The Commissioner of Police offers heartfelt and sincere
condolences to the bereaved and promises speedy and
thorough investigations into the sad incident.
In the meantime, we are appealing for calm as this
criminal act is investigated to the full.
Thank you.
