The
Kenya Police Force is hosting the 9th edition of the
Inter-Services Boxing Championships from today: 27th
to 30th November 2006.
Preliminaries contests are scheduled to take place
at the NAIROBI South “C” Police Pavilion
Gymnasium on 27th and 28thNovember 2006.
The finals, to be graced by the distinguished attendance
of Hon. Maina Kamanda, MP – the Minister for Gender,
Sports and Social Services as the Guest of Honour, will
take place in the evening of Thursday 30th November
2006 from 5.00 pm at the Pavilion.
In this year’s tournament, we have prepared a
superb display of boxing skills from our internationally
acclaimed veterans and the exiting new signings we have
recruited in the four Disciplined Service contingents.
The Kenya Police, the Armed Forces, the Administration
Police and the Kenya Prisons Service have confirmed
their participation during this year’s competitions.
In order to cover all disciplined services in the country,
the Organizing Committee has been working towards getting
the remaining two to participate in the competitions.
In this regard, although they will not have boxers in
the competition, both the Kenya Wildlife Service and
the National Youth Service have been invited as guests
during this year’s event.
The Inter-Services Boxing Championships were first
held in 1969 when they were hosted by the Armed Forces.
The event was held annually until 1979 when there was
a regrettable break. 16 years later in 1997, the annual
championships resumed.
Over the years, the Disciplined Services have played
a pivotal role in the development of boxing as a sport
and have regularly dominated the national boxing team
in international competitions. This is therefore an
important event in the national sports calendar.
Entrance is free. The bouts shall begin at 3.00 pm
today.
