UPDATE - WEATHER SITUATION REPORT

Police Headquarters issues the following information on the situation following flooding attendant to the unusually heavy rainfall being experienced throughout the country.

Reported fatalities

A man and child died yesterday in separate incidents following heavy rains and flooding.

In one of the incidents, Police recovered the body of a boy from the banks of River Migori at Otacho Sub-Location, Migori District. The body has been removed to Homa Bay Hospital Mortuary for identification and autopsy.

In the second incident, at Emis Sub-Location, Kibargoi Location in Keiyo District, an 80-year old man drowned following overnight rains yasterday.

Landslides

In Keiyo District, Epke Location, 200 people are camping in Epke Primary School, Epke A.I.C. Church and Epke Dispensary as a result of landslides in Kabawa area near Kerio River. The landslides caused serious damage on the Iten/Kabarnet Road. Consequently 78 other families are being relocated from Kabawa to safer areas.

Three schools: Epke and Kabawa Primary schools as well as Koitui Nursery School have been closed early as a result of the situation.

AREAS, ROADS AND OTHER INFRASTRUCTURE ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY FLOODING

North Eastern

The following roads have been seriously affected by flooding and are currently impassable: -

Wajir

• Korondile-moyale road
• wajir-hadadu Road

Garissa

• Garissa – Dadaab - Liboi Roads
• Garissa –Modogashe Road
• Garissa – Mombasa Road

Coast Province

Likoni – Lunga Lunga Road
Engineers are working round the clock to repair sections of the Likoni - Lunga Lunga Road that were washed away by flash floods causing serious damage.

Rift Valley Province

Laikipia District
Following heavy rains, the Rumuruti/Ngarengiro Murram Road has been rendered impassable at Tangi Nyeusi area within Ngarengiro Township.

AIRSTRIPS RENDERED UNUSABLE

Two airstrips in the North Eastern Province have been affected by flooding, rendering them unusable. These are: -

• Dadaab
• Bura
• Mbalambala

In the Coast Province, the flooded Lunga Lunga Airstrip is also currently unusable.

OTHER AREAS ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY FLOODING

In North Eeastern Province, Windsor Camp and Bulla at the banks of River Tana are still flooded. Modogashe Area, including the police station and air strip are also flooded.

At the Coast, much of Bura Division is seriously affected by flooding with some residents currently camping at Makini Primary School.

The situation is being closely monitored and more information will be released as and when it becomes available.

In the meantime, we are appealing on the public to exercise extreme caution and promptly report flooding, landslides and other rainfall related mishaps to relevant agencies and police. This will help us get the necessary assistance and rescuers to affected areas in time.
