Following
ongoing heavy rains pounding all parts of the country,
Police Headquarters issues this information in the public
interest.
Reports received at Police Headquarters indicate many
rivers are swollen and a number of roads have been rendered
impassable following heavy rainfall throughout the country.
The Public are therefore advised to generally exercise
extra caution during this season of unusually heavy
rainfall. In particular the public are strongly advised
to observe the following: -
• NOT to attempt crossing swollen rivers by vehicle,
bicycle or foot
• NOT to attempt crossing bridges that have been
washed away by raging flood waters
• Motorists should exercise extra caution when
on muddy or slippery roads
• Motorists and pedestrians should avoid unnecessary
night movement in areas and roads affected by flooding
• Motorists and pedestrians are cautioned to be
extra cautious when crossing bridges that are badly
damaged by raging flood waters
• Drivers of heavy trucks and busses are urged
to be mindful of other road users by taking extra care
while driving in wet or muddy sections.
In addition, we are appealing to all people living in
lowland areas susceptible to flooding to move to higher
and safer ground and those living in highlands vulnerable
to landslides to move to safer areas until the situation
stabilizes.
Residents of such areas are asked to heed Government
advice and offer maximum cooperation during Government
efforts to evacuate them if and when this becomes necessary.
The Government and relief agencies are continuing to
assist displaced persons with medical and other necessities.
The situation is being monitored closely and more information
will be issued as soon as it becomes available.
In the meantime, we are asking the public to report
any incidents of flooding to appropriate Government
agencies and police.
Thank you.
