River
Tana has burst its banks following the continuing heavy
rains throughout the country, including the tana’s
water catchment areas.
As a result several areas have been flooded, including
Ziwani and Bakuyu Villages in Garissa, displacing 2180
residents. The displaced families are camping at the
Garissa Farmers Training Centre.
Government Airborne Rescue teams conducting operations
in the affected areas today successfully removed to
safety 75 people, including 7 children who had been
marooned by the raging floods at different sites on
the banks of the River Tana.
In addition, commendable public efforts supplementing
the local administration using canoes and other local
resources achieved the rescue of another 52 adults.
While the rescue operations shall continue, the Government
is appealing to residents along the flooding River Tana
and other vulnerable areas to move immediately to higher
ground and remain there until advised otherwise.
The current water level is still very high with the
rain still pounding areas upstream.
