| Following
police operations throughout the country to deal with
crime and stamp out the proscribed group, including
Mungiki, Taliban and other banned gangs since Friday
10th November 2006, Police Headquarters is issuing the
following progress report.
Nairobi Area
During the ongoing operations in Nairobi, Police have
arrested 477 suspects in connection with criminal activities
by the banned gangs.
Central Province
In Central Province, 297 suspects have been arrested
during operations to flush out members of the illegal
gangs/sect.
Rift Valley Province
In the Rift Valley, police are detaining 41 suspects
arrested during the operations over the weekend.
Detectives are currently compiling evidence so that
the suspects are charged in court promptly.
We wish to reaffirm the Government’s commitment
in stamping out the thuggery and criminal activities
attributed to these banned gangs.
Consequently, the operations will continue until we
are satisfied that all banned groups including Mungiki
and Taliban have been completely eradicated throughout
the country.
In the meantime, we are appealing to the public to
cooperate with the police and assist in flushing out
members of these dangerous groups so that the gangsters
are brought to justice and their devious organization
s permanently dismantled.
In this regard, Police Headquarters assures the public
that any information passed on to police on members
or activities of the banned groups shall be treated
with utmost confidentiality acted on promptly.
