Traffic Police and the Kenya Police Motor Vehicle Inspection
Unit yesterday inspected 165 motor vehicles in Mombasa
and Kericho with the following results:
Mombasa (Inspected - 94)
• Un-roadworthy - 17
• Defective - 35
• Minor Defects - 42
• Compliant - nil
Kericho (Inspected - 71)
• Un-roadworthy - 15
• Defective - 28
• Minor Defects - 10
• Compliant - 8
The owners of both unroadworthy and defective motor
vehicles will be charged in court and be required to
make all necessary repairs on their vehicles before
being allowed back on the road. Over and above the consequences
outlined above, the registration numbers of unroadworthy
motor vehicles have been confiscated and returned to
the Registrar of Motor Vehicles and their inspection
stickers cancelled.
In addition, through the Transport Licensing Board
(TLB), the Government will also invoke the provisions
under the Transport Licensing Act with consequences
for non-compliance ranging from receiving warning letters
to suspension from operations for a specified term for
vehicles operating with TLB licenses, who do not comply
with the conditions of their licenses as by law established.
Inspections Summary
Between 30th August and 7th September 2006, 186 motor
vehicles were presented for inspection and found compliant
at the Motor Vehicle Inspection Unit after they were
found unroadworthy. They include; 157 matatus, 26 buses
and three pick ups/vans.
