| Following
the banditry incident at Dukana at dawn on Sunday 26th
August 2006, Police Headquarters issues the following
information.
At 6.00 am on Sunday morning, an estimated band of
300 armed bandits crossed from Ethiopia and attacked
Galwale Manyatta at Dukana. The attackers shot dead
one herdsman and injured four others before stealing
100 camels, 6,000 goats, 21 heads of cattle and 40 donkeys.
Three other herdsmen have since been found dead in the
area bringing to four the number of herdsmen killed
during the incident.
A Kenyan security team comprising of Regular Police,
Administration Police and Kenya Police Reservists immediately
pursued the bandits following the raid.
In the ensuing gun battle, the police contingent gunned
down 17 bandits and recovered the 21 heads of cattle
and 6,000 goats 30 kms from the scene of attack.
The police contingent is still out in efforts to recover
the remaining animals while Government officials are
in consultation with their Ethiopian counterparts to
assist in the recovery.
The four injured persons are recovering in hospital.
