UPDATE ON MISLEADING AND ERRONEOUS NEWS STORY ON KTN

Police Headquarters wishes to confirm the deportation to the United Kingdom of ISMOILA OLATUNDE RUFAI.

The subject was deported by air from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 1:05 am today Monday 24th July 2006.

A Kenya Television Network (KTN) news bulletin in the evening of 22nd July 2006 had erroneously reported that the Kenya Anti-Terrorism Police Unit was holding a “most wanted” terrorist, ABDULKARIM TUNDA, believed to have been “the mastermind” of recent bombings in Mumbai, India.

Reacting to the grossly inaccurate news story, Police Headquarters issued a press statement on Friday giving the accurate situation. In the statement, Vigilance explained the person who was in police custody until his deportation early this morning is different and had not been linked with the Mumbai terror atrocities.

Meanwhile, we are appealing to journalists to always confirm with relevant police authorities for accuracy before writing/broadcasting sensitive stories with security implications to avoid misleading and alarming the public.
