Following media coverage of two unfortunate incidents
that are the subject of police investigation, Police
Headquarters wishes to state the following.
1. Defilement case in Taita- Taveta
In respect to the defilement of an 8-year old girl
in Taita Taveta on 10th May 2006, a suspect was immediately
arrested and subsequently charged before court on 16th
May 2006 in line with established police procedure.
Three days ago, relatives of the complainant saw the
accused and protested over his release to the Officer
in Charge (OCS), Voi Police Station.
It has been established that the accused was released
on a three hundred thousand shillings (K shs 300, 000/=)
bond with a surety of a similar amount and a land title
deed deposited with the court. The case is scheduled
for hearing on 21st June 2006.
We do not wish to comment further as the matter is
before court.
2. Nairobi sodomy case
In respect to a case involving the sodomy of a school
boy from a city high school who is undergoing treatment
at a city hospital, police received the report on 1st
June 2006. Investigations into the report were launched
immediately.
While it is standard procedure that statements must
be recorded from the complainant and other witnesses,
doctors attending the victim have advised against recording
a statement from him at this stage on account of his
condition. This is a decision we are respecting.
Police Headquarters however assures the public that
appropriate action in accordance with the law will be
taken on completion of investigations.
Thank you.
