Kenya Police is disturbed by the hooliganism exhibited
by a small section of students of Nairobi University
who engaged in looting, stoning of motorists and blocking
of traffic on Uhuru Highway and University Way. These
were criminal acts conducted under the guise of demonstration
organized by civil society.
It has also come to our notice that
the students’ procession was hijacked by criminal
elements who persistently engaged in lawless acts in
a bid to provoke police to disperse the procession.
This was a deliberate effort to cause chaos and create
an opportunity to loot, cause malicious damage to property
and commit other criminal offences.
Kenya Police is reviewing footages
of looters and other criminal acts in order to identify
the perpetrators and prosecute them in a court of law.
Once more Kenya Police asserts it’s
commitment to protect the democratic right of citizens
to express themselves and to this end police officers
provided security and mounted police escorts to the
students through out their preferred route in today’s
procession.
The Commissioner of Police takes this
early opportunity to congratulate the leadership of
SONU and all those students who demonstrated peacefully.
For: Commissioner of Police.
March 10th, 2009.
