OUR VISION

To continuously endeavour to guarantee a secure environment conducive for Socio-economical development and political in the Province.

OUR MISSION

We are committed to upholding the rule of law and order, by pursuing policing strategies that are cost effective and inclusive of all the stakeholders.

FUNCTIONS

i. To maintain Law and order – in all Social Political and state functions.
ii. Apprehension and prosecution of offenders - To curb crime and promote a secure society.
iii. Protecting life and property- Through urban and rural patrols, highway patrols and enlisting public participation through community policing.
iv. Preservation of peace – By promoting peaceful co-existence in areas where potential conflict is bound to rise due to competition over scarce resources, religious ideologies, political alignment, and tribal animosity among others.
v. Enforcing all the laws, rules and regulations with which the police are charged- Firmly, without fear or favour.

BRIEF HISTORY

Eastern Province is the second largest administrative Province after Rift Valley covering 153,473 square Kms. It stretches from our International Border with Ethiopia on the North to Mtito Andei in Makueni District on the South.

The Province:-

i. Originally had its Headquarters situated at Isiolo District until 1983, when it was shifted to Embu District within Embu Central Business District. It was not until September 1992 when it was re-located to the newly completed complex at Itabua 4 Kilometres from Embu Town off Embu Kiritiri Road.

From 1965 to 1972, the Provincial police officers were in the Rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police

On 16th, 1973 Mr. J.K. Muoka became the first PPO in the rank of S/ACP. That was the trend until 24th April 1989 when Mr. F. N. Kimando becomes the first to serve in the rank of DCP. That is the trend upto now.

The province is divided into the following 13 Administrative Districts. However, 6 more new Districts are to be established as from Kenya Gazette notice No. 9143 of 16th November, 2005 to make them 19.

These are:-

1) Kibwezi district curved from Makueni District
2) Mutomo District curved from kitui
3) Kangundo and
4) Yatta curved from Machakos District
5) Tigania curved from Meru North which is now reffered to as Igembe.
6) South Imenti curved from Meru Central which is now reffered to as North Imenti.

iv. Has an approximate population of 5,164,069 people projected to be 5,328,935 by the year 2010. It has a total of 3,617 polling station and 36 constituencies.

GEOGRAPHICAL FEATURE

1. River Tana – The largest and longest river in Kenya with its source in Mt. Kenya and Aberdare’s.
2. Marsabit Mountains – which is referred to as an island in a desert.
3. Chalbi desert – in North Horr within Marsabit District.
4. Ewazo Nyiro River – in Isiolo which drains towards North Eastern Province where it disappears underground only to emerge in Somalia.
5. Yatta Plateaus – which prevent Athi River from meeting with River Tana.

OTHER INFORMATION

Five of the seven forks hydro-electric power generating stations i.e. Kindaruma, Kamburu, Gitaru, Masinga and Kiambere are located within the Province Meru National Park which is the home of White Rhinos.Major institutions include:-

i. Kigari, Meru and Igoji Teachers Colleges
ii. Kibwezi Agricultural Research Institutes at Embu and Kiboko in Kibwezi.
iii. Jomo Kenyatta Univeristy of Agriculture and Technology has a tissue culture farm at Kibugu.
iv. University of Nairobi has a Horticultural Research Centre at Kesoyani in Kibwezi.
v. Methodist University in Meru Town is a private University.
