Coast Province is the centre
of tourism attraction in Kenya with many beautiful beach hotels,
and has its Headquarters in Mombasa. It is also where the
port of Kilindini which handles huge volumes of Cargo as well
as being the main Gateway to East and Central Africa is situated.
Where as it is true that there are other religions in the
Province, Islam is quite dominant and its followers are very
conservative in their religion and culture. When it comes
to defending their religion, those of the Arab origin and
the indigenous ones speak with one voice and usually react
quite negatively to anything that they perceive to be against
their religion.
HISTORY
OF COAST PROVINCE
The Coast Provincial Police
command was born out of the need for the protection of the
families and properties of the officials of the British East
Africa Association, which was formed by Sir William Mackinnon
and later became The Imperial British East Africa Company
in 1988. This was because of the hostility which the Europeans
were facing from the inhabitants of Mombasa being the native
African, Swahilis, the Arabs and the Baluchis, who were mercenaries
employed by the Sultan of Zanzibar to protect Mombasa, then
a Fort. They were all against the intrusion of the Europeans.
On realizing they were in danger, the Europeans brought in
two companies of Sudanese troop who immediately replaced the
Baluchis.
These Sudanese soldiers were
later joined by the first lot of t two hundred (200) professionally
trained Police officers from India, who were brought under
Captain Rogers.
As time went by, the Europeans
realized the important role which was being played by the
Indian Police Officers in protecting their families and properties
and in 1902, they established a Police Headquarters near Fort
Jesus.
The growth of the police under
the European colonialists witnessed the recruitment of indigenous
Kenyans in Large numbers and on the 16th May, 1965, Francis
Judas Muola was appointed the first African Provincial Police
Officer in Coast Province.
